Killing the Buddha is a religion magazine for people
made anxious by churches...

Buddhist monks in study hall.

NOW IN PAPERBACK!
The new book by KtB editor Peter Manseau: "an elegant, sonorous story," "seductively well written," "spectacular... at once darkly comic and serious as a crucifixion... one of the great reflections upon the life of faith." Vows has been named one of the ten best memoirs of the year. Available now.
BUDDHA BLOG
Jan 11, 2007
The hardest working man in religion writing has a blog.

We're everywhere: Two KtB contributors make high profile debuts this week: Over at the Financial Times, Patton Dodd gives the UK his take on the latest American religious sex scandal, which hit quite close to home. At the Washington Post, meanwhile, Steve Prothero takes the air out of the notion that we are citizens of an Abrahamic nation.

Congratulations to recent KtB contributor Danielle Trussoni! According to the New York Times, her memoir is one of the ten best books of the year.
Nov 10, 2006
Last week, when Pastor Ted Haggard got into a bit of trouble, KtB's Jeff Sharlet was one of the first on the story. A few days later, KtB's Patton Dodd weighed in on a more personal note. Just goes to show you: Scratch any major religion story, and you'll find a Buddha-killing connection.

KtB editor Peter Manseau showed up on NPR last night to talk about the connection between his excommunicated family and the newest American saint. Listen here, and while you're at, buy his book. Vows is now available in paperback. Ten bucks! Cheap!

At long last, some news: Killing the Buddha is looking for interns. With the outpouring of support for our recent appeal, we've realized KtB should not only survive, but get bigger and better. We especially need editorial assistants and Dreamweaver artists, but if you'd like to help out in any way, please drop us a line. This is an unpaid position, as are all KtB positions, but it can lead places. Ideally interns will be based in KtB's new center of operations, Washington, DC, though we're happy to consider telecommuters as well. Schedule and responsibilities will be as flexible as you are. There's plenty of work to go around; let us know why you'd like to be a part of it.

Boy, it has been a long time since we made use of this space... Look for the Buddha Blog to return later this fall.
April 14, 2006
Congratulations to KtB's Jeff Sharlet, recently named a finalist for the Livingston Award for Journalism. Read his nominated article at Harper's

We at the Buddha Blog have been tied up these past two months. Apologies for the virtual silence. We return to form with an offering for your listening pleasure: a KtB editor on NPR, riffing on the Gospel of Judas and that other non-canonical gospel, Jesus Christ Superstar.

While Publishers Weekly, Kirkus, the Hartford Courant, Books and Culture, the Today Show, and Fresh Air all had nice things to say about Peter Manseau's memoir, US Catholic faulted Vows for its "lack of modesty". We were just beginning to think the book might hit too close to home for many Catholics, but finally they've shown Vows some love. According to this week's National Catholic Reporter, "Manseau's ability shines in this remarkable book." Vows is "a rich account of faith, tradition and change." Buy it here.

The first review of Laurel Snyder's forthcoming anthology Half/Life is in. Publishers Weekly says readers "will see themselves and their families in this book, and they will laugh, and maybe even cry, while reading." Preorder your copy of Half/Life now.

KtB contributor Michael Lesy has a new book out about the photographer as recluse and secret saint. Angel's World documents Angelo Rizzuto's obsessive practice of capturing images of city life that were at once compassionate, anguished, and confrontational. It's a profound and disturbing book; buy it now.
Dec 7, 2005
KtB roundup: Scott Korb has a great essay in the latest issue of Harper's Magazine; Peter Manseau is interviewed by Nerve; last and best of all: Laurel Snyder is a proud mama. Mazel tov and welcome to the world, Mose.
Nov 30, 2005
Many thanks to all who came to see Peter Manseau talk about his new book, Vows, in Annapolis, DC, NYC, Chicago, Boston and various spots around North Carolina. If you missed the tour, you can still hear the Vows interview on Fresh Air and listen to a reading and discussion hosted by WBFO.
